visual affirmations for interior design: creating happy homes

by abccreativity on September 14, 2009

when i was studying interior design, my focus was on learning to design holistically.  i love to create beautiful spaces and want them to feel beautiful as beautiful as they looked, and to function beautifully to support people in living happier, easier and more vibrant lives.  over time, i developed a holistic interior design approach which i call “visual affirmations”.

an affirmation is a positive statement or reminder of what you are creating, or want to create, in your life.  for example:

  • i love myself.
  • i am relaxed and i enjoy my life.
  • i am vibrantly healthy.

working with affirmations can be a powerful way of making positive change in our lives.   visual affirmations takes affirmation work much further and deeper. the colours on the walls, the pattern of the sofa, the way the furniture is arranged, all of it can be working to create the energy of your affirmation so that whenever you are in that space, you are bathed in the energy of your affirmation.

i designed my home around my visual affirmation concept and have absolutely adored living here, immersed in feel-good inspiring energies.  this space nurtures and supports me.  as i have grown, i have re-arranged and adjusted and shifted so that the space continues to support me where i am today.

today i’d like to share how i used visual affirmations in my bathroom.  i have a small and plain bathroom.  i really love my bubble baths (and actually i loved this bathroom when i first saw it because it has a whole closet it in, and i thought “oh yum!  a whole closet i can fill with fluffy towels and my lush collection!”) and wanted to really fully enjoy my time in this space.  so the affirmation i created to work with here was:

je suis belle

(must be written in pink and in french)

it feels french, it feels beautiful and a little decadent, sparkling, curly and curvy.  a little romantic, a little sweet. i wanted to feel wrapped up in that energy during bath time. pampered.

using visual affirmations makes the interior design process more fun and inspired. the aim is to get a really solid understanding of how your visual affirmation feels to you, and then allow that feeling to guide all of your decisions in the design process. a lot of confusion and uncertainty over which colour to choose or what goes with what vanishes when you have your visual affirmation as a focal point.

in my bathroom the shade of pink completely creates this feeling for me. i painted the walls and ceiling in it, so i would be immersed in it while in the tub. i love it. all of the accents help to support and strengthen the feeling of my affirmation on a really personal level.  crystals, sequins, french cursive writing, a duck, a mermaid, a hot pink feather boa, fluffy pink towels, beautiful art by my friend lucie walker (her rawkin raw food blog is here), sparkling candle holders and ornaments.  this may not be how “je suis belle” feels to you, but it certainly feels this way to me:

bathroom

how does your home feel for you?  how would you like it to feel?

in the midst of transition right now, my home feels the same. kinda jumbled. tidy in some spots but not idea by any means. this is a wonderful idea with affirmations! i have a few secret messages hidden about but I like the idea of getting them more out in the open. love your site!

I’m also in the midst of transition…new baby (our second), new home (our first)…I’ve rented for all of my adult life (I’m 39 yrs old)…no painting allowed..white walls. My home is my HOME now. Living room is blue..bedroom burgundy and chartreuse. I’m possitively in LOVE with my home…it finally reflects me, us…who we are.

well…you asked :)

Your bathroom looks beautiful.
I have ceramic tiles all over the walls and floor, so I can’t change the colors so often, but as they say: your home is your castle.
Lovely post.

You always inspire me. I need you to come and do my house! Although, you’ve got my wheels turning…time to make myself some ‘me’ room. Can be challenging when surrounded by boys, but I know there is some space in this house somewhere with my name on it. Thanks Andrea. See you soon.

Lots of love!

As from my “plan”, I’ll be moving in one to two years time. So to start reading and learning about creating my own space is top on my last apart from writing. Thank you for the tips. :)

Visual affirmation? Hmm. I should think of one.
