yesterday my sister and i drove out to a small mennonite town to visit my grandma on her birthday. when we arrived, we parked next to this truck:

and we really wished we’d brought our cameras to get a really good photo of the truck. i remembered i had my laptop with me, so i took this photo. but it’s not clear enough to get a real sense of this truck – what was really fabulous is the image of deer in the rear window. i guess i am assuming that the truck owner is a deer hunter, and as an animal loving vegetarian this is foreign and photo-worthy to me.
but even more fabulous was when we were leaving. i was with my grandma, carrying a GINORMOUS squash that my grandma had bought for my sister. really hilariously large and so heavy that i was having a hard time carrying it along with my bag. at the same time, the man from this truck was returning to his truck. he looked at me struggling to open up my car door (i drive a beetle) and hold the giant squash and he laughed and asked “are you going to be able to fit that in there?”
we both laughed so hard. my vehicle is as strange and funny to him as his is to me.
people are awesome.

Funny! You’re awesome. And we’re All One! Pick truck or beatle driving. Deer hunting or vegetarian. It’s hard to remember that sometimes….

I definitely see the humor in the situation but…my first thought was: Chivalry, oh chivalry, where art thou???
