art journal workshop: letting the monsters out

by abccreativity on December 7, 2009

there are parts of me that are hidden, that i want to keep hidden.  the parts that feel not good enough.  too messy, too ugly, too wrong.  i never learned how to love and accept these parts, and i never wanted to.

until now.

now i come up against them and i know i can’t move any further forward without bringing these parts up out of the shadows.  their weight is too much for me to carry, not even for one more step.

that weight is really weighing on me today.

and i know that the more i let the monsters out the less i have to drag them along behind me.  once the light of day hits them they’re not really monsters anyway.  it’s only when they are hidden in the shadows that they seem scary.

once they are out in the light it becomes clear that they are just misunderstood, they just need some love.

this is a drawing i made about a year ago when i was feeling really frustrated, broken and angry.  i scribbled out the drawing and then left it in the pad of watercolour paper i drew it on, and put it back into my box of pads of paper… still hidden.

this weekend i took it out, cut out the “monsters need love” sign i had put at the bottom and gave it some colour and put them both in my art journal.

as uncomfortable as it is to take these things and bring them to light, the more i can do this, the more i lighten my load, the more space i create for the good stuff to flow in.
when i bring my frustrations, fears and uncertainties up out of the shadows and into my art journal i am able to transform them into clarity, peace and acceptance.
the next time you feel frustrated, blocked or scared i encourage you to take that feeling to your art journal, draw it out and see what insights and healing you receive.

You are doing some powerful interior work! It reminds me of the book, Taming your Gremlin, by Rick Carson. Have you read it? I am struggling with my inner critic and will take your suggestion and journal about it. Thanks!
