creating dreams come true: preparing for success

Post image for creating dreams come true: preparing for success

by andrea on January 17, 2010

it’s sunday – which means it’s creating dreams come true day. creating dreams come true is a free ongoing e-course and creative community to support you in living your dreams. if you are new, please feel free to join in. the more creative dreamers the better!  we are really getting into the thick of it now, starting to shift on the inside towards our dreams, while defining, on the outside, what it is we want to do.

because we anticipate fantastic success with this, next we want to prepare for that success to come in.  preparing for success sends out a message that we are ready for success and we welcome it into our lives.  i see this as opening the door to success.

we want to find a way to track and measure our successes.  often we have all sorts of small successes here and there but when we don’t account for them, we tend to forget about them.  when we account for them, we acknowledge them and celebrate them which creates more of a sense of success within.  that feeling of success will go on to fuel more success.  we can get caught up in a cycle of success that will carry us right into our dream come true.

what we don’t want to do is get caught up in measuring our value through our performance, or in measuring our success through external events.

what we do want to do is notice how many ways we already are successful and build on that in creating more of the things we want.

to explain further:

if i am only a success if i have a certain number of people attending my workshops and my paintings sell for a certain amount of money and i get this specific job and i exercise this many times per week – then i may be setting myself up for failure.  and i may have a long wait before i have any successes to report, which will probably generate a sense of frustration and failure.

if i look at the positive of what is happening, (ie – if i wanted 50 people at a workshop, but 25 show up, i can celebrate the 25 that were there instead of feeling like a failure over the 25 that weren’t there.) if i celebrate each step along the way – then i am setting myself up for greater and greater success.  as i continue to report and celebrate my successes i start to see myself as more successful and i find it easier and easier to take the steps necessary to create the big dreams that i really want.  taking this approach also makes the whole thing more enjoyable.  who doesn’t enjoy being a success?

does that make sense for you?  please comment below if it doesn’t and we will discuss it as this distinction is quite important.

so how will you track and measure success?  a few possible ways:

  • start a “success tracker” blog post and every week look at what went well and add it there.
  • start a new journal that will be your “success journal”.  you can also add photographs and mementos of your success.
  • put a sheet of poster paper up on a wall in your home and call it your “success wall” and write your list there

with all of these, it’s important to commit to regular updates.  at the end of each day, or each week, however often works for you, take a few moments to think about what has gone well and add those things.  or when something really great happens add it right away!

next week i want to hear about how you have set up your success recording system, and see a link to it, or a photo of it.  i’d also like to hear about what you are doing to bring your dreams into reality.  are you setting up appointments, making new contacts, opening saving accounts, registering for classes, researching, creating, making commitments, scheduling time to dream, taking really good care of yourself… what are you doing to move towards your dreams?

creative dream check-in:

let’s share our assignments from last week.  this will be either the “this is my life” list or the map from create a map: a simple guide to creative visioning.

i am giving up on mr. linky for now, as he was crashing too often, so please share a link to your list in the comments below and remember to go visit each other.  it’s so much more fun when we do this together! also please feel free to share about your experiences in doing the exercises.

here is my map:

i really loved working on this.  i set up a creative exploration station in my living room.

what a treat to spend some time really diving into the feeling and beauty of my dreams and intentions for 2010.

what a powerful experience it is, to take time out of our busy lives to think about dreams and dream about dreams and plan for dreams to come true.

once again, i am so grateful for each one of you joining me in this.  we are generating amazing creative dream energy here!

Above is the link to my -’This is my life’ list- because that is what I made- a list- I found it a little difficult, and ma not sure if I did it ‘right’- have doen it in several sittings- I suspect I might have been better of with some pens and crayons and a big sheet of paper on the floor like you did Andrea! The computer can be a bit sterile for dreaming- I like to get a bit messy with it! :)

I also wrote a list. It never fails to be intimidating…posting all this publicly…but I feel a real sense of “conquering” every time I do it. Thanks again Andrea!!! XO

Hi everyone,

Here’s my This is My Year List for your perusal. I was just re-reading my list and caught myself in the feeling that I’m not actually going to achieve all these things. I then reminded myself of the previous assignment of listing all we’ve already achieved. It reminded me that I once felt the same about so many of those things too! What an epiphany! You’ve really thought this through Andrea! And thank you to everyone who’s participating in this group and making it fun and supportive!

that’s my “this is my life” list. naja, i found it difficult too. and i think in words, so although you are right when you say the computer is a bit sterile for dreaming, i doubt i would have done much better making a visually artistic map.

my main difficulty with it was coming up with the intentions. i have things on my 100+ dreams list that fit in each category, so that part was easy.

i guess, and this is probably an issue i should work on, is that after i e-mailed you with a draft, andrea, and you made suggestions to make it better, i felt like i was doing it wrong. so after that, it was harder for me. it is challenging to think in new and different ways, though, so even though i did struggle with the assignment, i am grate*full for it. sometimes we all need to think in new and different ways :)

love~

had a lovely busy day today and am pretty tired this evening… looking forward to checking in with everyone’s lists tomorrow.

visioning can be challenging, it is asking you to think outside of the box and expand beyond your comfort zones. that’s why i do that part as a workshop by itself, and offer a whole guidebook to guide you through the process.

but however you are doing it is perfect for you and your dreams – there is no right or wrong way.

Reading everyone else’s lists…I think I did mine wrong! I thought we had to write out what we are doing right now…not writing out what our lives will be…hmmmm…..

however you read the assignment and felt inspired to do it is going to be the right way for you. but there seems to be a bit of confusion so i’d like to clarify. here is what the assignment was:

and now we’re ready to buy a ticket for the creative dream jet plane. so our assignment for next week is to chart out more specifically what dreams you want to have come true this year. to set our destination to make sure we’re getting on the right plane.

we will keep checking in on our big dream lists throughout the year, but in order to move forward with our dreams, we are going to narrow them into focus without actually losing any of the wonderful ideas we have come up with. i call it the “this is my life” list. if you are really focused on what you are doing in 2010, you could also call it the “this is my year” list.

to do this, i look at life categories, such as: health, relationships, abundance, creativity/purpose, self-love/self-care and happiness/adventure.

for each category, i list the main things i do want to work on this year, then i create an intention statement. the intention statement really conveys how i want this part of my life to feel and it is that feeling that can capture everything on your list, plus all sorts of other wonderful things that you haven’t even thought of yet.

for example, in the health area:
this is my health: i feel powerful, strong and vibrantly healthy in my body.

- walk 25 km each week

- figure out a way to shop/cook/prep healthy easy meals that i enjoy

my goals definitely support my intention statement, and my intention statement definitely supports my goals and opens things up for other good things to flow into my health this year.

to clarify: the intention statement is only how you want this aspect of your life to feel. it does not contain specific goals or desired outcomes. goals and desired outcomes go in the list of things you want to work on.

______________________________________________________________________

i do want to stress that there is no “right way” or “wrong way” to do this. if you feel you’d rather do it differently, then by all means do it differently.

coming up with intention statements as i have described here is an extremely powerful process, but by no means necessary.

the name of the exercise “this is my life” speaks to the spirit of creative visioning – claiming your dreams as your life.

what a treat it was to read each of your lists!

i also noticed that in reading lee ann’s list, it felt clear that her intuition was guiding her in a slightly different direction with the exercise. and i see that elizabeth’s challenge with the intention statements is helping her to think in new and different ways. i’m sure only good can come of that.

each one of us has the ability within us to create our unique path to our unique dreams. i want to offer suggestions and provide support. i do not want to suggest that my way is “the way”.

i am looking forward to seeing more lists!

I liked this exercise. It did feel very powerful for me and centering! I found myself mostly reflecting on my values and on those perspectives/attitudes that I feel I need to improve upon. I feel that what I’ve listed is more like groundwork than a map. But that’s okay – it’s gives me a great starting point!

Andrea’s “Creating Dreams Come True” project is is a new goal-setting (or dream-setting!) approach for me.

I have chosen to share my project progress in the form of photographs at http://www.flickr.com/photos/ivorl/sets/72157623107985741 and I invite you to add your comments under the photographs. You do require a free Flickr membership to do this, however, and I urge you to take that step so I can read what you have to say. Wishing you all the best in fulfilling your dreams!

This was great! It helped me clarify what habits and goals I really want to make a priority this year. Here’s my list: http://theadventuresofmamabear.blogspot.com/2010/01/this-is-my-year.html

I mentioned on my blog that I did struggle with the lists a bit. I found that I had to be sure to word things in a way that brought me joy and inspired me. But once I got that figured out it was wonderful, and it inspired me to create a daily “to-do” list…I called it “This is My Day.” :-)

i just love the different approaches everyone takes with these.

jennifer i love the amount of reflection you put in and the sense of laying a groundwork.

susan thank you! i sure am enjoying ;)

ivor it makes me so happy to look at your photos! first, it is a delight to see my book in print in all of its hot pink glory :) but seeing you re-do the map after the workshop and bring in more and dream bigger – feels so amazing. that is exactly what i’d hoped for when i got the idea to give you all the workbook after the workshop. that the opportunity would be there to keep working with creative visioning as it only gets better the more you use it, so i am just so excited to see where this goes. yah!

meg that daily list is a such an amazing idea. you could even make that into a poster for your home! it really clarifies and simplifies your intentions for your life.

I made a list of 101 for 2010 within the past two weeks, too. I feel like this New Year has been a decade long already.

Here are the 101:

I don’t know why this one took me such a long time to do, but I FINALLY finished it and posted it today. It helped me a lot to see what other people had written because then it triggered things within myself. Anyway, here’s the link:

Thanks for your encouraging words, Andrea. Well, I’m a little slow in getting into this, but I’ve added a few more pictures with notes, and today I wrote up and posted My Success List at [http://www.flickr.com/photos/ivorl/sets/72157623107985741/]. I’m sure it’ll be amended over time as I think of more. You’re right, Andrea, it does give one a sense of success and sets the stage for more. I have a feeling of achievement and a greater sense of confidence in achieving more. I must say, though, that writing and revisiting some of those past successes did bring up a lot of emotion for me. And it was a big step for me, in trust and vulnerability, to actually post the list where anyone can see it. Yikes!

Hi everybuddy !

I’ve done an inner map for this wonderful internal shift !

And as few steps toward my goal :

- I’ve joined this community and done the exercise this way, enjoyed much !!!
- I’ve joined the SARK community, subscribed to juicy journaling,
journaled a lot
- I’ve a guidebook I’m making for the time I’ll be stuck, toward my real book about art-therapy
- As I want to create a community about art-therapy, I started a blog about my way of using it
- I made a visionary collage toward my new life

That’s all, folks !
