creating dreams come true: try something new

Post image for creating dreams come true: try something new

by abccreativity on January 24, 2010

it’s sunday – which means it’s creating dreams come true day. creating dreams come true is a free ongoing e-course and creative community to support you in living your dreams. if you are new, please feel free to join in. the more creative dreamers the better!  i am really enjoying how more dreamers keep finding us and joining in and sharing their lists.  if you look back through the posts from the last few weeks, you will see there are lots of new comments from beautiful new dreamers.

this week we are going to look at trying something new.

trying something new can create shifts.  sometimes we can be stuck in our ways, and there is no flexibility or space for dreams to grow.  small changes can break things loose and open up space to let some dreams in.

change can also help us see things in a new way, or think in a new way.  change is a very powerful tool in creating dreams come true.   so this week i want you to to create some kind of noticeable change in your life.  a few ideas of ways to create a change:

  • take a different route to work or school or wherever you go most days
  • make a new friend
  • wear a colour you wouldn’t normally wear (clothing or makeup)
  • change your hairstyle
  • try a new restaurant or recipe
  • if you usually go out on saturday night – stay in.  if you usually stay in – go out.
  • buy your groceries at a different store
  • if you are an artist – use the colours you usually don’t use
  • paint your bedroom a new colour or get new sheets for your bed
  • wake up at a different time or go to sleep at a different time
  • if you usually take showers – take a bath instead or vice versa
  • sign up for a class in something you are interested in, but don’t know how to do
  • if you drive to work – try public transportation, if you take public transportation, try getting on or off at a different stop and walking
  • buy a vegetable that you have never tried and figure out how to prepare it

if there is something you *always* do find a way to change it.

the purpose of this is to try on change, and see where it takes us.  creating a change opens up an opportunity for something new to come in.

for some change inspiration, check out the cheesy little video i made last year:  “making friends with change”.

creative dream assignment for this week: do something different, and then notice how it feels, see what happens, and report back next sunday.

creative dream check-in

meet me in the comments section below to share the success recording system you created and share what you have been doing to bring your dreams into reality.  also feel free to share anything good that is happening with your dreams, or any challenges you are facing.

my check-in:

at first, i created a page in my business planning art journal to track success.  after i finished my page i realised – i don’t want to cram it all into one page!  i want to make a whole book of success.  or even a series of books!  to start, i made a glittering cover page for my success book and painted the first few pages in fun colours to create a fun space to record my successes in.

success journal

what i have been doing to turn my dreams into reality:

  • clarified what i want to do next with my art and my workshops
  • added details and colours to my wall-sized “ABC creativity creative visioning map” in my art room
  • booked a travel doctor appointment and made a list of everything that i have to do for my trip to turkey and egypt
  • started writing extra “creating dreams come true” blog posts.  this is so i can schedule them to post automatically while i am away on my trip.
  • took advantage of warmer weather to go for long walks
  • brought my old pencil crayons to work and committed to sketching there on breaks
  • started a new blog: www.ArtJournalWorkshop.com (it’s a collaborative blog – please join in if you like art journaling!)
  • went to a dance your prayers workshop
  • set a difficult-for-me-to-set boundary in a relationship that honoured me and what i really want
  • made more time for playing and experimenting in my art room
  • experimented with quinoa
  • took lots of bubble baths (santa was very generous with the lush bath products this year!)
  • spoke up about something that was really important to me, even though i was scared

i am really enjoying these steps into my dreams, feeling life my life is becoming clearer.  my dreams are taking up more space and other things are taking up less space.

i can’t wait to read about the wonderful things you have been up to.

I love your lists!

I started writing successes in my diary- I was writing 3 successes and 5 ‘Thank you’s’ for each day…

Then I got really stressed about an assessment I have coming up this week, which determines if I get offered the job at my school as a permanent position or not.

Actually- judging on feedback I have received so far my guess is that I won’t… But we will see…And if this door closes- I wonder which window will open?

There has been successes every day though- here are some:

Learned and taught a two part harmony Folk song to my EFL students, and made a recording of it.
Am establishing a good relationship with my EFL students
Had some interesting insights at my Therapy session
Been for muddy walks in my new Wellies
Had a good conversation with my man about my insecurity about giving feedback
Watched a super inspiring film ‘Gypsy caravan’ with the most amazing people/ musicians
Made Year Plans and terms plans for my classes 6 and 8
Learned two new 3-part harmony songs (they still need a bit of practise)

Hello Andrea

After a hectic couple of weeks, I feel I have fallen behind a little with some of the tasks, but Im back now, and the reason for that is down to choices Ive made, which are more supportive to me and my needs (see, your course is working for me already!)

I keep what I call an ‘Adventure Journal’ which is a place I write down everything I want to achieve and then the achievements! Its excellent psychology for reminding myself how much I have done, and how much I can and will do. Im going to use that same book for my success tracker, but as I dont have a picture to show you today, Im going to share a few insights from it here.

I am making a big decision about whether to leave a creative group I belong to (not this one!) in order to create more space and time for my painting.

I am scheduling more art time into my week and saving my sewing and crocheting for ‘wind down’ time in the evenings – scheduling allows me to focus on what is important, and what I really need to do to achieve my goals. It also prevents overwhelm.

I am signed up for a yoga class, starting this thursday.

I am in tune with my body, listening to what it wants and needs, plenty of water, sleep, good food.

Despite the cold, I have elected to walk in nature at the bird reserve to day, and felt relaxed and refreshed.

I am following my intuition on a daily basis, it is never ever wrong, I love having this internal guidance system!!

Look forward to catching up with you soon.
Love Julia x

I am using an app to track calories
Making “pros and cons” lists to refine exactly what my priorities are or what I want them to be
Learning mac program ‘garage band’ toward the podcast idea
Trying to keep up with more online art journal challenges
Watching art journaling videos instead of tv reruns
Keeping up with current podcasts and messaging the hosts
Forgiving myself for not being perfect (ongoing battle)
Get my most pressing things done early in day, then on to my passions
Learning to leave the grunt work for later (housework, organizing)

Here it is– http://pinkgargoyles.blogspot.com/2010/01/plannersuccess-tracker.html
I’m hopeful that I’ve created a system I can stick with. I considered buying a planner refill since we’re still so close to the beginning of the year, but I have a history of using planners sporadically at best and elected not to spend the money.

Ginny January 29, 2010 at 11:44 am

I’m just using a notebook at the moment. I was going to use a day planner, but not enough room. But I did want something where I could record the date, what I accomplished that day, and then set my intentions for the following day. I found in the past, when I wrote about what I intended to do the next day in my journal, I was way more likely to actually DO it! LOL

My biggest issue right now is giving equal time to each of my three biggest goals for this year, which are:

To complete my romance novel
To license my art to at least one company
To get a contract for at least one illustration project

I find that I tend to get focused on one thing and spend all of my time working towards that, and end up neglecting my other goals. I’ve wondered if I should just give up and focus all of my attention towards one goal at a time, but I don’t really like the thought of that! I want it all. LOL

What I’ve done recently towards my goals:

Romance Novel:
I created an outline from all of my notes, so that I know which scenes/plot points need to be in which chapter and roughly how many chapters I’m going to have.
I added several pages to the chapter I’m currently working on
I also worked on a query letter. Though I’m a long way off from needing one, it helped me to figure out the “hook” for my romance, and how I will promote it when the time comes.

Licensing:
Entered into a program to learn more about licensing
Doing research on the type of products I would like to license
Working towards creating a line to market

Illustration:
Submitted an illustration to “Illustration Friday”
Purchased two books on freelance illustration
Received high praise for my work from two of my favorite illustrators :o )

For my goal of taking better care of myself:
I purchased a Sonicare toothbrush. LOVE it!

pink i love your system – very creative!

ginny wow you are on a roll there! i want it all too, lol!

pink January 30, 2010 at 8:12 am

Thanks, Andrea!

Ginny, I have a hard time working on more than one project at a time too, and have been brainstorming possible work-arounds. In the coming week, I’m going to experiment with making sure I have either an appropriate To Do item or a specific block of time dedicated to each goal every day. That will help me avoid neglecting a goal. But to accomodate my tendency to plunge into one thing deeply, I’ll also have a block of time in the evening when I allow myself to work on whichever project is inspiring me the most. Crossing my fingers that it will work for me. If you discover a good strategy, I’d love to hear about it.

Ginny January 31, 2010 at 10:05 am

Hi Pink,

Yeah, it’s a hard call, because when you’re really on a roll in one area, really getting stuff done, should you just stop and force yourself to move on to another area, where maybe you’re not feeling as inspired? But then again, I really want to make sure that I’m making progress towards all of my goals. That’s why I broke it down to my three most important goals to begin with. So that I could really focus my time and energy in the areas that were most important to me.

I like your ideas for trying to insure you give equal time to your goals each day. I’ve also thought about dividing my week into three 2 day blocks, and then during each block, I could focus on one of the three goals. That would give me two uninterrupted days to focus on each goal. Then maybe day 7 would just be a check-in day or a day to spend working on the goal that requires the most attention right now, or something like that. Not sure how to handle this yet! :o )

isn’t it interesting how creative we can get with our time? i like to keep 2-3 projects in mind but i work on whatever feels the most inspiring in the moment. i do want to get a bunch of different things done, but feeling happy and flowing with my inspiration and creativity are really key for me.

There’s something new in my life… I volunteered to go to the hospital to have my pills about depression shorten.
It could be that I can’t go to the overcrowded hospital but anyway I want to take less pills to feel more alive ! Should do this without being with nurses (I really got high quantity to shorten and a psychical lifelong pathology)
