connecting with creativity

Post image for connecting with creativity

by andrea on January 28, 2010

opening up my journal is an opportunity to take a break, open up to myself, look around and explore where i’m at and how i’m feeling.  i’m sharing the photos here but it’s not about how it looks, it’s about taking that time for myself, my creativity, my happiness.  lately i really cherish my journaling time as i find that i can express myself through colour and texture in a way that feels much more satisfying than just using words.  and as i relax into the process, relax into myself and let my creative spirit flow, i find new parts of me to express, new ideas, new inspiration, new clarity and new joy.

here is a page i was working on last week.

starting out...

in process

growing + flourishing

growing + flourishing journal pages

growing

growing. this is my favourite part.

some of my co-workers got together this week, and created a painting for another co-worker for his birthday.  i loved the energy around it, people accesing their creativity and using it as a gift and a celebration.  how beautiful is that?  i was talking with one of them about how much she enjoyed taking the time to play with creativity and we talked about making a creativity playroom in our office.

i think that is exactly what this world needs - more ways to connect with our creative spirits!

but i know that art and journaling are not the only ways.  i also love gardening, knitting, long walks, spa days, adventure and i am currently exploring yoga.  what are your favourite ways of connecting to your creative spirit?  how do you like to relax into yourself?

When I have zero inspiration but want to make something, I head to my stack of old magazines. I pull out anything that grabs my attention and glue things into a journal page in some random ‘order’. Sometimes I go on to paint or doodle or cut out words to add, sometimes I just leave a few images for another day. But the very simple act of finding the images and gluing them down is relaxing.

dearest andrea, let me begin by saying i love everything in these pages, in all their greengrowing orangeluscious blooming. my favorite part is “i am here”. as for relaxing into myself (love the wording)…i have some similar things…walking (although it’s in the single digits and below zero windchills this week, so not so much right now!!), knitting, being cozy with my boys and watching a movie, breakfast with a dear friend, drawing, napping, ….to name a few!! xox

You said in such beautiful words exactly what journaling means to me. I like your page and I like that you seemed to let it take you, rather than planning out a “beautiful” piece of art. That is the way to go deep in a journal, with art and words. Thank you for sharing this.

Love the vines! I have an unexpected day off tomorrow, and I think you’ve inspired me to take a shot at painting something other than random blocks of color.

I enjoy picking out and reading a good book that I have taken a long time to pick out. I have a list of books that I update regularly of books I want to read. I then take that treasure with me into a long, hot bubble bath. I haven’t touched my “stash” of paper and craft supplies for way too long, but you inspire me all the time to get back into it and start creating something again. Have felt “stuck” for a while, but the itch is coming back. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! You do wonderful work!
