adventure diary: day one

Post image for adventure diary: day one

before i went on my trip, i painted a bunch of pages in a new moleskine journal.  then each day i’d collect my tickets stubs, receipts and various little treasures and stick them into my travel journal and write about what i did that day.  i really enjoyed this process of travel journaling.  it helped me to absorb the many amazing experiences i was having.  often while i was working in my journal i’d be amazed at all i’d done and seen that day.

now that i am back, it also helps me to remember the details of my trip more clearly.  here is my page from day one.

it took nineteen hours to get from winnipeg to our hotel in istanbul.  (i can’t believe i didn’t get a photo of the hotel!  it was really an amazing little place.)  all of the flights were delayed, which meant at our 2  connections (toronto and frankfurt) we had to run like hell to catch the next plane, we’d get there just as the doors were closing, and then something would happen to delay departure and we’d sit in the plane waiting.  kind of a funny way to travel.  (this did mean our luggage didn’t make it to istanbul with us, but it was delivered to our hotel about 8 hours later)

when i arrived i was exhausted and confused about the time change – where did those eight hours go and what time is it really?

we decided to go for a walk around our new neighbourhood and as soon as i got outside i was completely enchanted by istanbul.  we stopped at the “rumi cafe” not far from the hotel and i had my first turkish coffee, surrounded by gorgeous turkish lamps and little statues of whirling dirvishes:

energized, inspired and well fed (i also had a delicious plate of pasta and veggies) i was ready to explore.  out hotel was in old istanbul, we drove through this tunnel in the wall to get there:

we followed the wall to find other ways in and out of our little neighbourhood:

we went down to the sea:

and we found the blue mosque which was just a few blocks from the hotel:

it was like walking around in another world and as tired as i was, i was just so happy to be there!  there were so many domed buildings and cute things and unusual sights.

i slept really really well that night.
