{creative space} new art room

by andrea on May 25, 2010

now that i am sewing, and expanding my workshops and my ideas and my creativity i have come to the conclusion that i need a new creativity studio.

i was standing in my sweet little pink room wondering… do i need to buy a house that has a bigger art room? and imagining what it would look like when i realised – i’ve got a bigger room right next door – my living room which was being used as my yoga room.

so i started packing everything up.

art room chaos

and moving it into my new art/sewing/yoga/ play room.

new art room chaos

and finding new homes for my art supplies.

when i first moved in here, the living room was my art room.  i painted it that shade of turquoise because i find it inspiring and refreshing and it helps with my sense of clarity and calm.  it’s my perfect art space colour.  (when i was studying interior design i created a workbook for designing spaces holistically – using how you want to feel as the basis for the whole design.)

at one point i moved my art space outside of my home  (which, i discovered, doesn’t actually work for me) and made my living room a living room.  when i brought my art room back i wanted it in my pink room, which i called my bliss room – for art and meditation.  and that has been a blissfully wonderful space for me up until yesterday when i realised – i have outgrown it.

so here i am typing this in my new art room.  lots of space now.  what i love most about this is that i have separated things out.  i used to have my art stuff with my knitting stuff with my computer stuff with some of my sewing stuff.  then when i started sewing i set up a sewing room in my dressing room and that has turned into a disaster!   my dressing room is a tiiiiiny bedroom, and i put ikea  closet units along the walls to create shelves and hangers, and a big mirror and a huge makeup station.  (i take eyeshadow very seriously – it’s like art supplies for my face)  when i put the big sewing table in there it just didn’t work but i felt like a better idea would come along in time.  i was so excited to be sewing i didn’t really care of my dressing room got messy.

but anyway, art + knitting + computer stuff were all still in one space and it was getting to be too much.  so now i’ve got a sewing area set up with my china cabinet which is filled with sewing and knitting supplies.  i have a table with a small shelf with all the computer stuff.  and art supplies are in the art area.  i have my bright orange couch in here (i can’t imagine a creativity room without a couch.  i need to get really comfy sometimes.)  oh i love it!  i will share photos once it’s all set up just right.

and so this is my creating dreams come true assignment.  i changed my mind about my art room, i let go of what i had wanted and created something new.

UPDATE: i have settled in and cleaned up the space.  you can come and check it out, i made a video of the new art room.

Lovely! I totally agree that your physical surroundings can greatly impact your creativity and your spiritual well-being…which is probably why I’m so desperate to change my own space around.

I just love this and am noticing that it quite a few creative women are redoing their creative spaces right now. I think that’s what spring/summer bring out of us. As for me, I just look forward to the day I can actually have a dedicated creative space. *one day*

I love the colour of your walls. It’s stunning.

I agree with Woz, there is a trend at the moment to reorganise, clear out, declutter or just change the energy. I’m seeing that a lot too. It’s exciting – making room for new things to take place.

alisha i’m sending some re-arrange fairies your way to help you changing your space around.

woz that is cool! we are all so connected, aren’t we? i am seeing an amazing creative space in your future.

nicola thanks – i just love this colour. (i’ve had it in a couple of different places before this one) i like that – making room for new things to take place. it really feels like that is what is happening here.

I think this will be my focus today after writing my blog entry today. I really need to tidy up my “sacred space” and it also needs a MAJOR makeover – maybe I can do a little bit of planning this week and today to do my sacred space makeover.

I love your house and all the colour in it. And I love that you got your space dedicated to what felt right.
And one more thing I love? That you are so serious about eyeshadow! :o)

Oh I love your new room. It looks like the ideal playground for a creative soul. I wanted to reach out & explore your shelves of art materials – they look so tempting. I like the way you have a chillout sofa space semi-cornered off with cupboards/filing cabinet. Your room looks wonderful. Thank you so much for sharing!

oh thanks katina.
this photo is in the mid-move chaos. since then i have cleared the space – that yellow couch is in the other room now, and i’ve brought my orange playroom couch in and moved the storage stuff out from the middle of the room. you can see in my next post: http://www.abccreativity.com/2010/05/26/creative-space-settling-into-the-new-space-and-starting-to-make-magic/

I was wondering if you have talked about what type of book you use for scrap book (your creative journal) I find my pages seem thin and when I add different paints, glitter etc I have a crinkled look (like when a book gets wet and the after affect of drying it. I notice your pages seem to lay flat and have a nice finish. Maybe you have talked about it on your blog if that is the case please point me into the right direction. I would also love to know what other products you use. Thank you so much I love your web site.

thanks judy-sue. i have been meaning to put all that info together into a post…

right now i use 2 different kinds of journals – hardcover artists’ sketchbooks and moleskine notebooks. i love the sketchbooks because they come in really large sizes and are really thick (hundreds of pages), but the sketchbook paper is too thin for all the stuff i do – so i prime it with a good thick coat of gesso first. the moleskine paper is gorgeous!!! i use their regular sketchbook for light collaging/painting. i also have a moleskine watercolour sketchbook which is, of course, for watercolours – very gorgeous thick paper that takes paint beautifully.
