creative rest

i re-arranged my art room again.  my bright orange couch is now right beside the window.  i can’t tell you how much i love resting on this couch and looking out the window and appreciating the fall sky.

out the window

looking out the window

one of the best things about the leaves being gone is being able to watch the squirrels run from tree to tree, back and forth across the street and down the block.  i really love living on a tree-lined street.

and this week you might be amazed if you knew how much time i actually spent resting on this couch and looking out this window.  i’ve only been doing the work that absolutely needs to get done this week, plus a little extra – some painting and planning.  the rest of my time has been spent resting and dreaming.

opening up new space inside myself and my life for what is coming next

letting my plans for next year really sink in.  i have some amazing stuff planned.  lots of amazing stuff actually.

and my best work always comes after some kind of incubation period.  i have to let the ideas float around as i stretch myself however i need to stretch myself to allow the new ideas to take form and come to life in my life.  so, while once in a while i’ve been a bit annoyed at my low productivity because i really do love creating and doing, mostly i have been relaxing into this space with delicious anticipation of what is coming next.

i have to say that i am really admiring how well i have learned to stay in my own flow, and honour my creative cycles.  i have learned that i can’t have big glorious productive energy all the time and that being present with these incubation periods (instead of resisting them like i used to do) means there will be a bigger and more beautiful creative spark at the end.  and that big glorious productive creative energy will be back.

this week’s healing circle was believing in yourself.  this one did wonders for me.

Yay! I love this. I am totally in the same spot. I’ve been feeling a bit guilty about being lazy. But I also feel something new and interesting brewing inside. I don’t know what it is exactly but the incubation is mandatory for it to weave itself together before it presents itself. Bring on the couch!!!

Oh, this is so important! :-) I am still learning to see and accept the different periods in the creative cycles. It’s so easy to panic when the incubation periods comes. And then get anxious. And I think that that just makes those periods last longer ( = more panic & anxiety). Now I’m trying to see those periods as sitting in a waiting room and the best I can do there is dream and think happy thoughts. :-)

thanks scylliane, yes it is a great time for incubation.

yah torrie! bring on the couch and let’s get rid of that guilt.

stina thinking of the incubation period as a waiting room is brilliant. i love that. waiting for new and wonderful things to come.

Wonderful!! Rearranging is preparation for (what i call) my pregnant time. Partner calls it procrastinating. Only now coming round to the idea that “pregnancy” produces great results. In an often frenetic world this time becomes more important, more precious. Cherish its gift and make it a part of every day. (I’d probably go bonkers without it!)

pregnancy is a beautiful way to see it!

i was just looking at my datebook and kind of shocked by how many things i didn’t accomplish last week. but when i think “but i am pregnant with all these new things and need my energy to nurture that” it all makes sense.

also – when i’m in the creative zone i can burn through projects and tasks so fast. and i can only get to that zone by going through this time of nurturing.

That’s exactly it. Seems a more natural way for me to work. And the work produced is so much better.

My herbal teleclass last night focused a lot on how important rest and relaxation are for our immune systems! Our bodies aren’t designed for long exposure to stress…just short bursts to enable us to run away from danger. So when our stress levels go up our immune systems go down.
