ABCcreativity interview with kerry belviso (rowett)

i have been working very hard on ABCcreativity. i have worked my way down to 3 days a week at my day job and i’m getting ready now to take the leap into full time self employment. exciting! scary! and so i am interviewing super inspiring creative beans to gather tools, tips and inspiration from them. and i am sharing their gems here on my blog, every wednesday.

also: i have created a stepping out of your day job and into your creative dream resource page. on this page you can find links to all of the interviews in this series, and resources for building your creative dreams.

this week’s interview is with kinesiologist kerry belviso (rowett):

who are you and how are you creatively self employed?

I have my own practice as a Holistic Kinesiologist in Melbourne, Australia. I know you have Kinesiology in the US as more of a movement thing but this is different. People come to me to look at all sorts of issues – sometimes physical things but more often emotional. I work with a lot of people who have anxiety or depression – usually that clears relatively quickly and then they start to look at what’s underneath. So I work with clients 3 days a week, spend another half day or so on writing and admin and then do a little freelance work too up to one day a week too. A yoga teacher, Nadine, who was interviewed on here recently and I do some creative workshops too.

what was your day job before you were fully self employed?

I was a primary school teacher. I’m sooo glad I’m not doing that anymore. Even though I did enjoy it I didn’t want to do it forever. I found it really exhausting and the lifestyle was so structured. But it did allow me to travel and I worked as a teacher for four years in the UK and did lots of travel through Europe which I loved. Then I got a job at the Education Department running professional learning for teachers on web 2.0. I didn’t really know anything much at all about web 2.0 when I started so I’m not sure how I got the job. But it was easy to pick up. That’s all been really helpful for me in my own business.

how did you make the switch into full time creative employment? did you plan for it or did it just happen? was it gradual or sudden?

Last year I worked four days a week at the Education Department while I started my business one day a week. I didn’t have the opportunity to cut back any further so I decided to leave my job at the end of the year. That was scary! At one point, I had one month of work to go and just one day of clinic time organised. Nothing else would fall into place! It finally started to, at the final hour. Luckily it ended up that I was also able to do some online freelance work for the Education Department a day or two a week so it did end up being more of a gradual transition, which made things easier.

what fears came up along the way and what did you do with them?

I got married recently and I was really worried about being able to pay for a wedding whilst making the transition to running my own business. I did a lot of work on my own beliefs and patterns around money and had Kinesiology sessions to focus on what I wanted to achieve and clear any blocks. I did lots of writing to help clear fears that came up too.

what was the biggest surprise along the way?

For ages I couldn’t wait until I could work only for myself and not need to do any extra work. But now, though I’d be ok without it, I’m happy to have the option to do a little easier work that doesn’t use my *superpowers* – and continue to do a half or full day of freelance work each week from home.
